Wed, 19 Nov 2008 16:29:50 EST

Those of you with PhysX cards or old GeForce 8s serving a new purpose have some good news: Mirror's Edge will be PhysX Accelerated. No doubt an already impressive game can be even more impressive when those are enabled!
Wheelman Zooming Down The Highway to Gold
Wed, 19 Nov 2008 16:26:36 EST

The long-delayed UE3-powered Wheelman, starring Vin Diesel, finally appears to have a concrete release date - February 16, 2009. Not only that, but it'll deploy on PC, XBox 360 and PS3 simultaneously, too. Also soon to be coming... Wheelman: The Movie? Originally slated to arrive in 2007, the oft-delayed open-world effort was co-produced by "action-film megastar" Diesel, with his production company, Tigon Studios, said to have worked on the game "in close partnership" with Midway Newcastle. Both Tigon and Midway expect an eventual feature film, with a script in development.
Music4Games Interviews Kevin Riepl
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 17:30:04 EST

Music4Games managed to sit down the quite-busy Kevin Riepl for an interview. Among Riepl's credits are Unreal Tournament 3, Gears of War, and Huxley. Among many other revelations, he reveals his toughest project so far would be Epic's recently-released Gears of War 2, and specifically, how he was replaced: M4G: Which project presented you with the most challenges? Kevin Riepl: Aww what the heck….I would have to say Gears of War 2. In a way it was challenging because it was extremely tough to find out, that after writing several minutes of music that I was no longer a creative match for the game. Being part of the birth of the Gears universe I obviously had an emotional attachment to the franchise. So it was a challenge and tough at first, to understand this sudden decision by Epic, a company with whom I’ve worked with for many years. But people move in different creative directions all the time in this industry and I totally understand and respect it. It is something that is definitely hard to not take personally even though it wasn’t. Being a creative person, and an artist you absolutely take it to heart, but it helps you grow professionally and creatively. Honestly it’s not the best feeling in the world but I think it’s something every composer should go through.
What Went Wrong At Midway?
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 17:24:55 EST

Midway's recent meltdown has brought many questions and insights, and today, Variety.com throws their hat into the arena. "The mistake we made was, instead of just taking the base Unreal 3 engine that 'Gears of War' was made on and building games off of that, we let our tech and product development guys try to really modify the engine to add all these diff things," one ex-employee told me. "It was a ton of new technology which they just weren’t capable of doing. It put all the games way behind schedule." Even though Midway invested millions in building a common tech base for all its studios, apparently they all had to adapt UE3 for each project, which meant they couldn't share resources in a timely manner, so none of the promised benefits materialized. Making the code work for PS3 was particularly hard, sources said, and so games just weren't coming out. Look at the first half of 2007, when all Midway shipped was "Lord of the Rings Online" for Turbine, or the first half of this year, when all it shipped was "Unreal Tournament III" for Epic. Combine that with Midway's relatively weak cash position, as former Chief Marketing Officer Steve Allison explained, and it was a recipe for disaster.
Last Days For Last Remnant
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 17:20:06 EST

Last Remnant is a mere two days away from release on XBox 360, and the anticipation is building. But with a staff who's worked on such Square hits as Romancing SaGa and Final Fantasy XII, how can it not be impressive? Much of Remnant's staff previously worked on Romancing SaGa and Final Fantasy XII, and it shows through in their work. "We've avoided comparisons to SaGa and FFXII, because this is something completely different," Takai demurs. "We'd like to avoid preconceptions." Later, however, he did admit that he feels Remnant brings together the best aspects of SaGa and FFXII while adding new concepts and refinements. A paternity test would definitely prove the game's Final Fantasy heritage: Remnant's large-scale battle system runs on what art director Yusuke Naora calls "Gambit 1.5," an evolution of FFXII's Gambit system, which allowed for intelligent, automated A.I. control of nonplayer party members. "Players can't actually edit their party A.I.," says Naora, "but during the development process, the team worked with Gambits" -- the tool to define the rules by which the player's party would behave in the finished game.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Review
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 17:16:35 EST

Two days after MK vs. DC's release, and the reviews are beginning to come in. Today, 1UP offered their take on it, giving it a grade of B-. For all its faults, MK vs. DCU is an oddly enjoyable distraction from "real" fighters. Its masher-friendly controls appeal to me in a casual-gamer way, and the midmatch minigames (damage-percentage tugs-of-war, airborne ass-kickings with the defender mirroring the aggressor's button-presses in a bid for dominance) give the fights a sort of party-game vibe. Even the online mode is virtually lagless; outside of a parade of day-one savants, I can't complain. I just wish the game's signature (and somewhat watered-down -- go Teen rating!) Fatalities ("Heroic Brutalities" for the politically correct DC heroes) appeared in each character's move lists, as I'd rather not look up a button combination every time I want to shoot my opponent in the face or drop a Mortal Kombat arcade cabinet on his head. You know, the important stuff.

Hints about UT3 Expansion?
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 16:46:56 EST

Since the story broke awhile ago, speculation has been running rampant on the UT3 expansion - and now Epic's Stacey Conley let a small nugget slip on the UT3 Servers mailing list, when asked about a possible fourth patch for UT3. There was just a big launch and the developers are working on an expansion for the UT Series. We'll let you know as soon as there is something to announce. Thanks for your patience. :) Could it be this expansion is a bit more than what most think? We'll keep you posted!
