May 2008 merchandise exports higher by 2.3 percent

Based on latest foreign trade statistics from the NSO, Philippine exports in May 2008 amounted to US$4,224.2 million from US$4,127.9 in May 2007, better by 2.3 percent.

NSO to conduct National Demographic and Health Survey in August 2008

The National Statistics Office (NSO) will conduct interviews for the 2008 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) in August 2008. The NDHS aims to: a) collect data which would allow estimation of demographic indicators, particularly fertility and under five mortality rates; b) gather data on family and environmental health; c) collect information on awareness and prevalence of tuberculosis; d) determine the knowledge of women about HIV or AIDS; and e) determine the extent of violence against women. Results of the survey are expected to be available by August 2009. The survey is regularly conducted every five years by the NSO.

The results of the 2006 Family Planning Survey (FPS) conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) showed that the overall contraceptive prevalence rate among the currently married women aged 15-49 years old in Zamboanga Peninsula was 48.3 percent. This was relatively low compared to the 2005 figure of 51.3 percent and a slight decrease compared to 2004 value of 49.8 percent

Unemployment rate rises to 6.5% in April

More Bicolanos were out of job in April 2008, as employment rate dropped to 93.5 percent compared to 94.7 percent in the same period last year. Unemployment rate was placed at 6.5 percent, 1.2 percentage points higher than the April 2007 level, based on the latest round of the Labor Force Survey conducted by the National Statistics Office.

Every July, the nation celebrates Nutrition Month pursuant to Presidential Decree (PD) No. 491 issued in 1974 - Creating a National Nutrition Council and for other Purposes. The celebration aims to create awareness among Filipinos of the importance of proper nutrition. Through PD 491, the government declares that nutrition is a priority to be implemented by all branches of the government in an integrated fashion. For this year, the Nutrition Month's theme is "Wastong Nutrisyon ni Mommy, Siguradong Healthy si Baby!" which emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition for healthy moms and babies.

Latest figures from the Department of Education (DepEd) reveal that net enrolment ratio (NER) or participation rate at elementary level for SY 2006-2007 was 83.2 percent, lower by 1.2 percentage points from the previous school year.

Nueva Ecija, Still the Country's Top Palay Producing Province

For six years now, Nueva Ecija has been the top palay producing province in the country. In 2007, the province yielded 1,356,161 metric tons of palay which is eight percent of the total country's production. The province of Abra, meanwhile, posted the highest growth rate in palay production at 37.8% in 2007.
